Implementation of WCAG guidelines

Are you sure that every user can freely navigate and use your website?

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is a set of guidelines that help adapt websites to the needs of people with disabilities, such as visual, auditory, or motor impairments. Implementing them on your site can bring significant benefits!

  • You open your website to a wider audience. People with disabilities make up over 25% of the European Union’s population.
  • You enhance your company’s reputation as open, inclusive, and responsible.
  • You avoid potential financial penalties. In 2025, implementing WCAG guidelines will become mandatory for the private sector as well (previously mainly for the public sector), and failure to comply may result in unpleasant consequences.

Do you need to make your website compliant?

Who is required to implement WCAG?

Until recently, WCAG guidelines primarily applied to public institutions—such as government agencies, local government units, budgetary institutions, public healthcare facilities, universities, and cultural institutions.

However, the latest regulations are changing this—all businesses are now required to ensure the accessibility of their products and services!

The new regulations cover a wide range of sectors, including information and communication technologies, transportation, and banking. In practice, the law applies to, among others:
  • Products: computers, smartphones, payment terminals, self-service check-in devices, train ticket vending machines, and e-book readers.
  • Services: e-commerce, e-services, and retail banking.
FAQ

We have answers to your questions

What are the WCAG guidelines?

It is a set of international standards that help create websites tailored to the needs of every user. They cover aspects such as readability, ease of navigation, and compatibility with various devices. You can read more about WCAG in our article.

Is it mandatory to make a website WCAG compliant?

Currently, the requirement mainly applies to the public sector. However, in 2025, it will extend to a significant portion of the private sector as well. Even if you are not legally required to comply, implementing these guidelines is a best practice that enhances your company's reputation.

What do WCAG standards cover?

WCAG standards are based on four fundamental principles:

  • Perceivability: Information and interface elements must be clear and understandable.
  • Operability: Navigation should be intuitive, regardless of the method used (touch, keyboard, mouse, voice).
  • Understandability: The content and structure of the website must be easy to read.
  • Robustness: The website should function correctly across different devices and software (e.g., screen readers, smartphones, browsers, operating systems).

How to determine if a website is accessible?

A website is fully accessible when it meets all WCAG criteria—based on 4 principles and 13 guidelines covering code, content, and functionality. Accessibility is assessed on three levels: A (minimal), AA (recommended), and AAA (optimal). The WCAG standard requires compliance with levels A and AA, while AAA is optional.

Will implementing WCAG affect the design of my website?

We ensure that all changes align with the aesthetics of your website. Accessibility does not mean compromising on design or your branding!
Don't take the risk!

What are the consequences of not implementing WCAG?

Failing to make your website accessible is a risk that can significantly impact your business and reputation.

New regulations allow for financial penalties, which may be compounded in cases of persistent non-compliance with accessibility requirements. Not adapting your website to the applicable standards can lead to serious legal consequences, and the mentioned fines can exceed 100 000 EUR! You also risk losing a positive reputation in the eyes of your customers.
